What Is a Birth Chart?
A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of where the Sun, the Moon and the planets were at the exact moment and place you were born. Each one sits in one of the 12 zodiac signs and, when the birth time is known, in one of the 12 houses.
How to Read Your Chart
Planets show what is acting: the Sun is your identity, the Moon your emotions, Mercury your mind, Venus love, Mars drive, Jupiter growth and Saturn discipline. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly and describe a whole generation.
Signs show how a planet acts. Mars in Aries pushes ahead; Mars in Libra negotiates.
Houses show where in life it happens, from the 1st house of self to the 10th house of career. The line marked AC on the wheel is your Ascendant, or rising sign, and MC is your Midheaven.
Aspects are the angles between planets. Trines and sextiles are easy connections; squares and oppositions create tension that pushes you to act.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don’t know my birth time?
Tick “I don’t know my birth time”. You still get every planet’s sign and the aspects, calculated for noon. The rising sign and houses are left out because they change every few minutes, and the Moon may be a few degrees off.
Where can I find my birth time?
It is usually printed on a long-form birth certificate. In the United States you can request one from the vital records office of the state where you were born. Hospital records and baby books are other good sources.
How accurate is this calculator?
Planet positions are accurate to about a tenth of a degree for births from 1900 onward, and daylight saving time is applied automatically from the historical time zone records in your browser. If a planet sits in the first or last few minutes of a sign, check it against a second source.
What is the difference between Placidus and Whole Sign houses?
Placidus divides the sky by time and gives houses of unequal size; it is the most widely used system today. Whole Sign makes each house exactly one sign, starting with the sign of your Ascendant. The planets and signs are the same in both; only the house numbers can differ.
My city is not in the list. What should I do?
Pick the nearest large city in the same time zone, or tick “My city is not listed” and enter the latitude, longitude and time zone. A difference of a few miles changes the chart very little.
