Frequently Asked Questions

How is my Chinese zodiac sign calculated?

Your animal is set by the Chinese lunar year you were born in. The 12 animals repeat in a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

I was born in January or February. Which animal am I?

It depends on whether you were born before or after Chinese New Year that year. If your birthday falls before it, you belong to the animal of the previous year. This calculator checks the exact date for you.

What do the five elements mean?

Each year also has one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. An element lasts two years in a row, so the full cycle of animal and element repeats every 60 years.

Why do some sites give a different animal for early February?

Some traditions, mainly in Chinese fortune-telling, start the zodiac year at the solar term called Start of Spring, around February 4, instead of at Chinese New Year. This calculator follows Chinese New Year, which is the more common convention. Dates follow China time, so a birth on the day of the changeover in another time zone can fall on either side.

Is the Chinese zodiac the same as the Western zodiac?

No. The Western zodiac has 12 signs based on the month you were born. The Chinese zodiac has 12 animals based on the year, combined with five elements.
