Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some months have more than one birthstone?

The modern list has been extended several times so that every month has an affordable and widely available choice. June, August, October, November and December each have two or three stones.

What is the difference between modern and traditional birthstones?

The traditional list grew out of older European customs. The modern list was standardized by American jewelers in 1912 and updated later: alexandrite, citrine, tourmaline and zircon were added in 1952, tanzanite in 2002 and spinel in 2016.

What does the hardness number mean?

Hardness is measured on the Mohs scale from 1 to 10 and shows how well a stone resists scratches. Stones of 7 and above suit rings worn every day; softer stones such as pearl, opal and turquoise are safer in earrings and pendants.

Can I wear a birthstone from another month?

Yes. Birthstones are a tradition, not a rule. Many people wear the stone of a child, a partner or simply a color they like.
